Grains.

I want to give you the run-down on why you should avoid eating grains. First, here is a list of common grains. This list may surprise you.

  • Corn
  • Oats
  • Wheat
  • Quinoa
  • Rice

Yes, corn is a grain, not a vegetable. For a long time, I considered corn a vegetable, I'm sure there are a lot of people who still do.

Before I start explaining away, there's one thing I want to say... If you want to be fat, eat grains. Cows are fed grain to fatten them up. Ok, yeah, that's cows, what about humans? Historically, Gladiators ate grain(Barley) to fatten up so that when they fought, less damage was done to their bodies. I'm all the time hearing about how we need grains to be healthy. I don't think so.

My neighbors cows.

Anti-Nutrients

Grains have anti-nutrients. When you eat grains, you are eating the reproductive part - the seed. In order to survive and grow a new plant, the seed has to have a defense mechanism just like anything in nature does. That is the anti-nutrients. They resist or prevent proper digestion when you eat them so they can survive your digestion. Legumes are also high in anti-nutrients.

Anti-nutrients can cause a leaky gut and inflammation. Two things you definitely don't want. There's a lot of science involved in explaining this, and I think you should hear it from someone who knows more about it than I do. Read the Paleo Mom's explanation: Part 1Part 2.

Hopefully, I've enlightened you and made you think about what you're eating. Your food is important, it deserves serious thought.
